Care for the Caregiver: 6 Ways to Stay Positive

Positive SpiritA topic of concern for most caregivers is how to care for their own spirit. The very nature of caring for a loved one with declining health can make a positive outlook difficult to maintain. But doing so is important for your health and that of your aging loved one.

What can caregivers do to help care for the spirit?

There are a variety of ways you can take care of yourself while taking care of a loved one. They include:

  • Keep a journal. Write down your thoughts, hopes and fears in a spiral notebook each day. It doesn't need to be anything fancy. The simple process of journaling your unspoken feelings will help you accept and eventually come to terms with things you cannot change.

  • Read from a religious publication or daily reflections book. Take a few minutes each morning over coffee to read a positive, affirming message before you begin your day.

  • Meditate. If you are new to meditation, you can find many helpful and free resources online. UCLA has a Mindful Meditations series that is a compilation of podcasts. They are all free on iTunes.

  • Pilates & Yoga. Both are great ways to exercise both your mind and your body. YouTube has many free demonstration videos if you don't have experience with either of these types of exercise.

  • Join an online support group. You can find an online support group or resource for every imaginable type of illness or event. They are sponsored by organizations such as The Alzheimer's Association, The Family Caregiver Alliance, The American Heart Association and more.

  • Utilize respite care. Caregiving is both mentally and physically exhausting. If you are a primary caregiver for an aging loved one, consider routinely using respite services a few times a month to give you time to restore and renew your spirit.
