Senior drivers often struggle with getting in to and out of their cars safely. Physical conditions like arthritis sometimes keep them from wearing their seat belt because of the pain that reaching over their shoulder to grab the belt causes. Fortunately, there are a variety of driving aids that can help. Some are designed to improve safety while entering and exiting the vehicle, and others for staying safer on the road.

Safety Equipment to Help Senior Drivers in Massachusetts

These driving aids are ones you can explore with your senior loved one:

  1. Car Support Handles. This device makes it easier and safer for older drivers to get in and out of their vehicle. The handles attach to the frame of the door to give the senior driver something stable and strong to use to pull themselves in and out of the car.
  2. Swivel Seat Cushion. Another way to help older drivers is by installing a swivel seat cushion. Placed on the driver’s seat, it swivels a full 360 degrees. That makes it easier to slide behind the wheel and slide back out again.
  3. Seat Belt Handles. Reaching over the shoulder to grab and pull a seat belt handle can be painful for many seniors. Some don’t wear a seat belt because of it. Seat belt handles give the senior an additional four to six inches of reach, and that makes pulling the seat belt closed much easier.
